We only install nortel phone systems at this time. Many of our government customers are looking at ip phone systems.
Is the allworx IP phone system any good & how hard is it to install, configure IP phone system
not that I am a advocate of running voice over the data network but it is becoming more commonplace you go into a
location replace the switches with their poe units and
plug in the phones into the data wire and run the ip phones right next to the tdm stuff untill you work the kinks out
My first foray into IP systems was a VentureIP box. IFM. You plug in the controller, plug in the phones, add the power and voila! Building the infrastructure was still an issue, powering the sets is retarded, especially if you use the "economy" PoE switches (read HP FS108), but all-in-all, IP systems require very little in terms of setup internally.
If it’s a Nortel you need proficiency in Network Routing Service, Signaling Server programming experience and access to the latest firmware and patches. I recently installed an SRG aka BCM 50 with srg key codes. It as an adventure and great learning experience. Also a helful tip have internet access at all locations. This helps with getting access to Tek-Tips !!
I can just agree to all the things said, network knowledge is a must, if you have an IT guy on hand that has experience with VoIP then you are lucky but most IT people I found are great in setting up their servers and can do the security of the individual PC's but the actual networking is a whole different story (not to offend anybody that actually can do both very well) have a networking person on hand that can program the switches (hopefully they are managed so you can have a proper setup) and can tell the IT people on site what they need to setup in their DHCP to make the phones work and also help them with any problems should you have any external IP sets or remote locations to deal with.
