I just purchased Deitel and Deitel's C++ book and acquired
an introductory version of a Visual C++ compiler. I have
some experience writing scientific C++ code but want to
break into windows applications ...

However, I'm having difficulty installing this compiler
on my windows machine ... (I really prefer Linux!)
I'm using Windows XP with MS internet explorer 6.0.

I downloaded all 12 "cabinets" for the compiler from the
microsoft site (i.e., the visual studio site), but am having problems because MDAC 2.1 is not installed on my computer. It appears that MDAC 2.1 is related to the version of internet explorer installed on the machine.
I get all types of error messages basically saying something to the effect that I can't install the compiler on my current system (I think).

Can anyone suggest how to successfully install this
visual C++ compiler on my system?

Thanks.
