Howdy!

I am downloading ISO images for RH Linux 7.3 (was suggested to use this version for the application I will be using).

I am intending to install linux in my Compaq Proliant 7000. I have SmartStart 5.4. I also have MS WIN2000 Server, if I need to have something installed prior to linux ISOs ...

I am expecting to be up late, but I would like to go sleep before sunrise if I can help it.

Thank you all in advance!

The first step is to burn the ISO files to CDs. [NOTE: This is not copying the ISO file to a CD, but rather opening the ISO file within the CD-burning software and allowing your burning software to interpret the contents and burn the CD.]

The first CD will be bootable. If your install machine can boot from a CD, you're all set.

If your install machine cannot boot from a CD, check the contents of the first install CD under Win32. There'll be a directory and instructions on how to create boot floppies for a Linux install from Win32.

Start following the install instructions.

sleipnir214,

Thanks for such prompt response. I got the CD burning part, no problem! Actually, I have NERO and I think it can work with images just fine ... Thanks!

Now, I have installed SCO UNIX and MS WIN2000 Server a couple of times. I know enought to answer questions and even set things up if need be but, without any previous experience (ever) with linux nor a check list to help organize myself, I fear Murphy will walk right in without announcing himself.

Now, should I or should I not:

a) Install WIN 2000 first?
b) Skip WIN2K and use SmartStart to install linux
c) Skip a & b and boot directly from linux boot disk

Thanks;

Jose Lerebours

I'd just install W2K then Linux. Then let Linux's boot manager take care of selecting which OS to boot.

But then, there may be some squirreliness that Compaq's hardware will introduce. Unfortunately, I'm not that familiar with Compaq's hardware, other than to know I'm not fond of it.

sleipnir214,

Thank you very much for taking the time to get me started
on this venture.

You've given me enough to blast off and, hopefully, I will land on the moon ... So, you get your star for your time and kind assistance.

Regards;
