installing external modem

I am trying to use a USR sportster 33.6k Is there a good site for modem strings? Any instructions on how complete this installation would be greatly appreciated.
I had it set up (so I thought) but when using "tip" it would come back with a error "Can't synchronize with Hayes" any ideas on why I am getting this or how I can fix it?

Can't synchronize:
I suggest connect your modem through Woindows Hyper Terminal, then use at command to load it's default settings.

You can go to the usrobotics web page to get the settings.

The usrobotics modems parmaters can be display using ati4.

type ati4 and enter
