Installing Delphi 5 under Windows Vista Home Premium

Greetings:

I finally tried to install my old Delphi 5 compiler under Windows Vista Home Premium. The installation went OK, but then, when I tried to start Delphi, I kept getting the error that some file with a .??? extension could not be renamed to that same file name with a .dbo extension. Is this a Vista security problem? I have only one account on my laptop, so I assumed (probably incorrectly) that I had all the administrator rights (I have installed other applications with no problem -- all Vista has done in those cases is give me the "Do you want to proceed?" dialog box).

under what folder did you install delphi5?

if you installed under the program files folder then the behaviour you described is normal under vista/W7 (UAC).

install delphi and its tools under a root folder (like c:\delphi5) and you won't have a problem.

Or turn off UAC, so it won't bother you any further. Older development tools are not very compatible with UAC.

I think it's a bad idea to turn off UAC.
As a developer, you must take into account that end-user machines have UAC enabled. Developing under UAC gives a better understanding what problems UAC can give.

Like I said, installing the tools in a non-windows folder solves all problems concerning UAC.
