Hi, I am on a LAN with Natting going on. I want to install Debian over the internet for whtich I have downloaded the base CD. Problem is that when the part comes where it after asking the options (HHTP, FTP etc.) tries to download the files, it just can't and there is a screen showing it has failed to do so. Could someone plz help me out here? Is it possible to do it over internet accessing from a LAN? How can I know its not because of my LAN card not being installed? (though I tried on 3 different pcs with dif. cards). Or if possible, can I have a PC in my LAN to serve the 7 CD images I have downloaded? If yes then please tell me how to use ISO images without burning them? I use WinISO but it seems the resulting files dont work as the Burned ones do. Thanks in advance!

Well, if you have isofs installed on another linux machine, you can mount the iso image, and it'll act as a cd that has been mounted, and you can point your installation toward the computer with the mounted iso, and install as per you were going - OR you can open up the port on your router that is required for installation, and point it to the computer for which you are installing (I'm sure that once it initializes your NIC, that it gives it an IP address), so you can do it that way, or if you are trying to install via images on a windows machine, you can mount an iso image via Daemon Tools... it will create a virtual CD drive, and you can share it, and then try to install :) Otherwise, just burn the cd's, and install via the cd drive :)

I have installed debian on a machine inside my lan many times and it was downright trivial. However, I had a small pc running debian acting as the gateway and doing the NAT. Are you positive you have configured the gateway machine to forward packets (echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward)? Also during installation, you are prompted to configure your network, including setting the gateway address. Are you using your gateway machine's address, or the ISP's gateway address (should be your gateway machine).

Just some thoughts. Good luck!

Thanks guys, I will sure give it a try but there is another thing that a friend of mine told me. He says that I have to configure my NIC during the installation so that I could reach the internet mirror sites for further files. We are gonna do it in a couple of days and he was pretty sure about it. I will let you know if it worked for me, take care!
