Hello

I have SQL 2000 developers edition installed on my laptop

I want to look at 2005 and test database/dts packages translations

I have just installed SQL 2005 Standard edition

After installation, 2000 continues to work but 2005 seems to be pointing to the 2000 database (shared server name?)
I don't seem able to simply attach a new database (AdventureWorks) in 2005

Can I run 2 instances of SQL in this manner?

Thanks

Damian.

Yes you should not have any problems running both. Of course only one can be a default instance though.

How are you looking at 2005? Just in case you are trying you will not be able to use enterprise manager for the 2005 instance.

Have you checked configuration manager to see if your services are running? Also a easy check. See if you have the database files for both instances in teh directories
e.g.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\MSSQL\Data\

The worst mistake you'll ever make is to do something simply the way you know how while ignoring the way it should be done[/sub]

Are you sure that you installed a second instance and didn't upgrade the existing instance?

If you didn't specify an instance name and SQL 2000 was setup as the default instance then you probably have upgraded the SQL 2000 instance to a SQL 2005 server.

MCSA (2003) / MCDBA (SQL 2000)
MCTS (SQL 2005 / Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0: Configuration / Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007: Configuration)
MCITP Database Administrator (SQL 2005) / Database Developer (SQL 2005)

I'll second MrDenny's comment. If you have SQL 2000 installed as the default and you try to install SQL 2000 again, it automatically 'grays' out the default instance option and asks you for an instance name. However, it doesn't work that way when you are trying to install SQL 2005. The default is to install as a default instance OR to upgrade the existing default instance. So, if you did not uncheck the default instance - you upgraded the existing SQL 2000 instance as MrDenny said.

Hello

Thanks for the advice
Looks like I upgraded rather than installed
Deinstalled, reinstalled and specified an instance (called SQL2005)
This works perfectly
