what is a raw partition and how do you create one?

hi naknak,

A raw partition is somewhere you *could* put a file system but decide not to, so it's a physical or logical volume.

You create one because you're going to put a database volume there - usually.

The advantage of a raw partition is for applications that do their own buffering, so they don't get any benefit from the buffer cache you get with a filesystem. you often hear systemm admin's and dba's talking about avoiding "double buffering" with database applications -- and this is what they mean.
