Hi guys,

I was reading Wullie's excellent FAQ (faq65-1832), very informative guide!

Relating to this, I just bought a new laptop running Win XP and I was going to try to install Apache/PHP/MySQL, I was wondering does anyone have experience of running an OS with Apache on their PC/laptop? Did you encounter any majour problems? Anything I should watch out for? Any precautions I need to take?

ALL advice appreciated!!

What's the difference between a laptop and a desktop and a rack-mounted PC?

The only problem I could see is the way that you operate a server. Laptops do not have ideal ventilation and easily-replaceable components (like hard drives) for extended use. If you are using the laptop for development and you do not plan on leaving it on endlessly then there should be no problem.

Hi mate,

If this is going to be a production server, try to avoid XP.

XP Pro has a limit of 10 concurrent connections.
XP Home has a limit of 5 concurrent connections.

The only way to avoid this is to get a server OS, (2000 Server or 2003 Server)

I have a laptop that is used as a development server and it is also sometimes used in production, I have never had a problem with it.

Hope this helps

Wullie

picklefish :)
thanks, i'm not sure how it would work on a desk mounted PC either. I a little nervous as I don't want to fffk up a new laptop.
yeah, it will only be for development, a few hours per day max.
Do you think there's anything I could do to minimise future problems...limit it's use I suppose??

thanks mate. It won't be a production server, just development.
Does the laptop suffer much when the server is running, is there much of a drain on the system?

I'm really clueless on this as you can tell. I'll only be using the server for learning php, messing with ssi etc

Hi mate,

There isn't any difference running a server on a laptop or any other type of machine than there is from running any other program.

Hope this helps

Wullie
