I have never installed AIX before but I need to install version 4.3 by tomorrow.

Is there any documentation available?

Does anyone have some tips?

I just need to get the standard install done (I believe) and get it onto the network.

After which someone else is going to install CATIA on it.

I have installed HP-UX but not AIX.

Do I need to load any patches after the install?

Does this system already have an OS on it? If it does, you will want to change your bootlist so that the system boots off of the CD, rather than the hard drive. To do that type:

bootlist -m normal cd0 hdisk0 hdisk1
bootlist -m service cd0 hdisk0 hdisk1

This tells the system when booting normally to go first to the cd drive, then to hdisk0 and then hdisk1. and the same order when booting into maintenance. hdisk0 and hdisk1 are the normal disks that AIX boots from. To confirm these are the correct disks, type lsvg -p rootvg.

After you have changed your bootlist, do a shutdown -r and follow the prompts on the screen when the system boots off the CD. Installation is sort of similar to HP -- you just basically sit there and watch it.

I do recommend that you go to the IBM website to get the latest maintenance level.

I will try to find the URL for that website and post it later (I'm not on my usual computer today)

Once you get the system installed, you are going to want to familiarize yourself with smit (graphics) or smitty. This is AIX's sys admin tool, which is far better than sam -- not as buggy and it gives you more options, I think. Also, if when you are creating filesystems you think you are going to need large file enabled FS, select that option when you do the create. You can't change it once the FS is created, which I think you can in HP.

Sorry it took so long for someone to answer you.

Post again if you have questions.

It pretty straight forward, insert cd and boot, follow on screen instructions. Not much difference between GUI and ascii installs. As a side note 4.3.3 is no longer supported as of 31/12/2003. If you get stuck, post your problem and I'm sure one of us can help you out.
