I have an HP laserjet hanging off a printer that is in a WinNT Domain.

What do I need to do to get that printer to work on my linux box. When I tried to just "wing it" I got a message from Linux suggesting that I should install Samba, Since I dont know what Samba is, and since, in general, installing new things on Linux is a major pain, I wanted to ask you bright people before I went and did silly things on my own.

:) thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Hi,

Well it all depends on how that printer is set up. If it supports tcp printing (lpr protocol) you can just set up a remote print queue without samba (i.e. print queue @ip address). HP also have an initiative on linux printing --> .

If you want to use traditional windoze printing, i.e. print to \\ntserver\hplaser or suchlike, you would indeed need samba (client) because samba provides the smb/cifs protocol support needed. Samba is basically both client & server software that provides connectivity to windows shares and enables a linux/unix box to act as a nt server and/or be a domain controller.

Rgds

Thanks. Dont have the printer setup to just hit it's IP so I guess Samba it is :)
