Hi, I am replacing a MICS with a BCM400 3.7 Win NT system. I have installed several Norstar systems in the past. This will be my first BCM installation. This system is in use by a business with 4 CO lines and 25 Digital sets. The business will be requiring remote IP phones at a later time. I would appreciate any guidance you can provide on better understanding this system. I have the system, one combo 4X16 module, and a DSM16+ module that I am going to install next week. The system will have an analog module ATA8 installed, 10 Voice mail seats, and about 16 IP sets enabled at a later time. My questions are how do I go about updating the system, would there be any benefit in upgrading to 4.0, and in what order should the modules be installed? I noticed post about mismatching modules on different bus. I have already booted the system up and reconfigured the IP address and I am now somewhat familiar with accessing the system. I have not load any key codes at this time. I have had some trouble registering with Nortel to access the support pages. I will attempt to register again soon. Thanks for any help.

I would do the 4.0 upgrade first. I like the Element Manager must better than the old Runtime Java! So much easier. The upgrade is easy when the system is being installed.

I agree! 4.0 (non-NT based) releases seem much more stable and reliable as well.

Also to get key codes you need to be a Nortel partner.
I would find the 3.7 I&M guide the switch settings are in there.

Hi, Thanks for the replies. Like I said I am new to the BCM and appreciate all your help. Could I set the system up now temporary and purchase a new HD with 4.0 and swap it out at a later time? I have a new IP phone key code not loaded. Should I load it before the upgrade if a HD swap isn’t a good idea? What configuration should the modules be installed?

Thanks

No HD swap. u'll need to purchase the 4.0 upgrade so u can migrate your existing keycodes to the new 4.0 format.

Well I will purchase 4.0. What configuration should the modules be installed.

4X16 Combo
16+
ASM8+

Doesn't matter. The module locations are interchangeable. I think most techs use the Norstar approach of trunks on top and stations from the bottom. The dipswitches are how the MBMs numbering is coded. Very important and follow the docs closely.
