I just received a film scanner (CanonScan FS2710) without the scsi card and while shopping for the card and cable noticed a "SCSI 2 TO USB ADAPTER CABLE" setup that will allow me to bypass installing a scsi card altogether.

Now, is this recommended? I've never worked with this type of setup and can imagine it being a little slower but would it be a big difference in speed working with a high res scanner?

That scanner should have connections for both the USB 1.1 and SCSI-2 interfaces.

Data transfer rates:
USB 1.1 -> 1.5-12 mbs
SCSI-2 -> 10 mbs

If your system has integrated USB 1.1 ports, then see if it's fast enough.
If not, then invest in an SCSI card.

Thanks but it only has the SCSI-2 interface, 2 of them in fact.

Hmmmmm.....
Some online searching shows that a USB-to-SCSI-2 adapter cable is more expensive than a PCI SCSI-2 controller card w/cable.
