Installing a dj870 printer.....

Hi folks,

my mate has an Apple Mac Im not sure what type..and I was
trying to reinstall the drivers and the DJ870. But it
wont work, he had it on before, and 1 day it just stopped
working. So I went over to his house and with no experience
on Mac's I installed the printer after 3 hours!!! that was
a couple of months ago......
So the same thing has happened again, and I cant reinstall
the printer as I dont know what I did last time....I can
install the drivers, and it gives me two options in the
'chooser'...which one do I choose and how coz it wont accept
any of them....I am definitly using the right drivers etc.
If anyone can give me a quick run through of the process of
installing the printer that would be greatly appricated.

I've got a couple thoughts here for you.

I'd sure like to know more about the configuration you are dealing with. This is a stand alone machine and it's directly connected to a printer via serial cabling?

We use some HP printers here.
Assuming there aren't other variables (like a Keyspan USB adapter) it's simply a matter of installing the drivers, rebooting, and selecting the appropriate icon from the chooser window.

When you open the Chooser there's a Set-up button that might allow you to chose from three varieties of the HP printer.

Can you post a bit more so I can give better directions???

hey Its just by chance that I saw this post!! I never
visit the Mac Forum as I dont have one!!
OK with the printer, it is a stand alone and it is connected
via a serial cable. I can install the drivers no problem,
then I reboot, and go into the chooser and there are two
options in there, "DJ870 with apple talk", and "DJ870"
and I cant pick any, if I chose one of them I get an error
saying that the printer is not connected and to make sure
the cables are correct etc...
This happened before and I fixed it....but Im not sure what
I did coz I had no experience on Mac's. And now the problem
has occured again and after trying for hours I just cant get
it to work, my mate who owns the Mac knows a bit about it
and says what Im doing should fix the problem....
Im installing it from 3 floppy disks and Im SURE that they
are the right ones etc etc...Ive checked all the cables and
they are all fine....the printer even gets the info that the
Mac sends down through all the ports when you turn it on...
Is there anything you need to know....????
(I dont actually know what version of Mac it is...but if
you need to know I can find out...)

Sounds like an older Mac if it even HAS a serial port.
Are you plugging this cable into the printer port on the rear of tha machine or the modem port?

You say neither icon in the chooser is selectable?
The (at) icon is for a networked printer and you simply don't need it with the configuration I'm guessing you have.

I'm sure you have the proper drivers but wonder about the installation after you mention the three hour install.
Should be about 4 minutes max. Can you fill in some details here about the methods you are using to install?

You can check the following items but I would also trash all the hp drivers (search the hard drive for HP)
and might even run the uninstaall from the hp drivers disk. Make sure you are turning the printer on before you boot up the Mac.

and .....

1. Make sure to disable QuickDraw GX in Extensions Manager and restart the Mac.

2. The HP DeskWriter printer driver is not installed in the System (System 6) or Extensions (System 7) folder. Do a Find File to locate the driver and then move it into the appropriate folder (if you prefer, you may delete existing files and repeat the installation process).

3. Make sure that there is only ONE Syatem folder on the machine in question

4. Check to see if the entire Installation Disk was copied to the System Folder, rather than running the installation program. If so, delete the copied disk and run the installer program.

5. Check to see if the HP DeskWriter printer driver has accidentally been put into the "HP Fonts" or "DeskWriter Fonts" folder.

If it's just stopping then it could be the cable...
Also if the mac in question is running OS9 then the latest drivers with an update patch are needed, get them at

It's a good idea to use the latest driver anyhow.
Before you remove or install any print drivers restart the mac with extensions turned off (hold shift key down whilst restarting until you see the message "extensions off&quot

Deskjet driver ain't compatible under OS 9.1 with ATM 4.5.2 or 4.6 (light) active (with direct USB connection).
