Hi

I am trying to add a 308EC to a partner 5 slot carrier with a ASC 5.0 processor, The processor is installed in slot 3, and works fine. When I try and install the 308EC R.3 card in slot 1,2,4, or 5 the light green light lights up for about 3 seconds, then goes out, then nothing happens. The 308EC is brand new, factory sealed. Where might the problem be? I have tried reseating the card in all the slots with no luck.

Any Help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Phil

hey phil, Assuming that you do have the R5.0 Processor, sometimes you need to do a system reset clear. Avaya has it as one of the procedures on an install on any ACS starting from the R1. unfortunally if your ACS is alredy programmed you have some issues. You can always do a back-up #124 then do a restore #125. To perform the system reset you enter programming mode and type in #989clear.....I don't have a phone in front of me to tell you the actual numbers. If it doesn't boot after that, I as a tech, would try getting a new card to see what happens. If the new card doesn't work, try a new carrier. Good luck.

I've recently had many issues with ACS processors that would operate as a standalone, but wouldn't "see" any other expansion modules. If a replacement 308EC doesn't work then I would suspect the ACS itself is the problem. Verify you have a R5 processor by dialing "Feature 59" from any display phone on the system. If it turns out that you have a R1 then you need to flash upgrade the processor to be compatible with the 308EC.

I have verified that it is a partner ASC 5.0 with the f59 I did the #989 clear and it still will not see the 308EC I also have a 200E that it will not see either, Does the carrier have to be compatable with the ACS system or will any 5 slot carrier work? Is there a way to tell what is bad? ie: the processor, carrier, expansion cards? I do not have any access to other parts for this system.

Thanks
Phil

Any 5-slot carrier should work. The carrier is rarely bad unless there is some obvious physical damage such as bent, broken or shorted pins on the connectors. From my recent experiences I would suspect the ACS is the culprit.

I always heard that you need a new/ACS 5 slot carrier when upgrading from a partner plus or partner 2 - the old 5 slot carrier wouldn't support the new ACS processor - i always upgraded them - have heard recently that some of the newer plus or 2 carriers would work but not the older ones - would be interested in hearing more opinions n this subject

The old 5-slot carriers work fine, you just need to break off the tab on the center slot, otherwise it will interfere with the battery compartment.

The old 2-Slot carrier (for the "baby-partner" system) will NOT work, you need an ACS 2-slot carrier.

Hi Phil,
From what I have read, you might try to reseat the processor. The action of the 308EC expansion card looks like it doesn't see the processor. The 308EC expansion goes in slot 1. The carrier will work fine as others have pointed out. The new carriers are better for cooling when you add more cards. You are fine now.
One thing I have noticed in the past are cracked solder joints on some pins on the back of the PCB in the carrier. Look for a dark ring at the base of the connection on the solder side. Resoldering with liquid flux (not acid) will work fine.
If you have a defective card, it's even money on which one. All you can do is substitute if all else fails.

The problem we find most often in our ACS repair lab is that either of the two main chips on the ACS processor that allow the processor to both recognize and communicate accurately with mods in slot 1 & 2 (left side of processor) or 4 & 5 (right side of processor) are blown or defective.

We always test every ACS we repair in a full 5 slot carrier just for that reason as these two communication chips are frequently damaged during power spikes/surges or even when the protective functionality built into the ACS power supply fails and the main circuit board is "toasted".

Drewmich,

Do you know if the magix uses a similar method to communicate with the various slots? I have a magix that momentarily looses communication with the 412TDL cir pk in slot 1. Replaced the 412 but no help.

Rainman,

The Magix processor circuit board has a much different chip configuration than the ACS Processor circuit board but essentially it performs the same functions except it doesn't the separate chips (like the ACS Processor does for communicating with the left 2 & right 2 slots in the 5 slot carrier.

You may have a Magix processor problem (what release is it & version?) or occasionally a Magix carrier's backplane can have a slot problem as it too has PCB board solder connections that can get corroded or broken. Have you tried doing a system backup, TRUE COLD FACTORY RESET of the processor (LED WILL FLASH F on bootup if done properly) then reboot and do BOARD RENUMBER and then RESTORE your latest dated programming save and that might solve your problem also.

You may need another processor or carrier, but call me as I have a couple of other tricks that might work.

Thanks Drewmich,

This cust has magix r2.1 v8.0

It has been in about a year without a prob. About 3 weeks ago this cust noticed problem with active calls being put on hold. Today I found out it only seems to affect the TDL sets in slot 1. The TDL sets are going dead for about a second and then comming back. ALso, after each black-out the volume settings for those TDL sets reset to factory defaults.

Slot 1 & 2 are 412 TDL's, slot 3 is an 016, slot 4 is 100DCD.

I have grounded the switch, swapped the 1st 412, swp'd the power supply and the surge supressor.

I will try the processor and or backplane next.

Thanks for your help.
