I just bought a compaq laptop and it has me log on to networking with the old users name, and to shut down it has "log off cathie " . how do i remove the password thing and all the other persons names on it, they gave me the old passwords and 98se cd, also it says licenced to cathie and wanna get that off...

any advice appreaciated...and please explain in steps...i'm green at this...well kinda :)
thanks

Is the machine no longer connecting to any network - including dial-up? (if not, you could remove networking protocols).

You can ignore logon prompt (cancel out or Escape key will log you onto default desktop. Or you can supply a different username - then it will prompt you for new password for new user. If machine is set up to keep separate profiles for each user, it will also prompt if you want to do this). 98 is not a secure o/s - logon largely decorative unless connected to a domain or someone has set up policies on the machine.

Licenced to can be changed using this freeware - (it has many features, so you may have hours of endless fun finding the one you want - post back if its a problem and I'm sure someone here will point you to it).
Or a registry edit (which is what x-setup does) - but would have to go and look!

HTH - post back if you need more.

are you logging on to a network, if not then goto control panel click on network and change primary logon from client for microsoft networks to windows login.

after that reboot, then control panel, click users and set up to change user or edit user

in addition, you may also want to delete the file cathie.pwl. this is where the password of the old user is being stored.

hope this helps. peace! [peace]
