Hi Guys,

I've read the sys requirements, and understand that Exchange 2007 SP1 / SP2 can be installed in an environment with 2008 DC's.

However the sys requirements also state that it requires a Windows 2003 global catalogue... it doesn't say Windows 2003 or higher - just Windows 2003 / Windows 2003 R2.

Yet MS also say on TechNet that Exchange 2007 can work in an all Windows 2008 Domain... which implies you DON'T need a Windows 2003 GC...

Anyone confirm what is right? Do I need to have a Windows 2003 GC to install Exchange 2007? If so, what will happen once the 2003 GC is decommissioned (planning to do so soon)

Cheers,

Steve.

SBS 2008 uses Exchange 2007 and I've just upgraded our exchange to sp2 so I'd say that it will work fine in a 2008 only environment.

Cheers BigleBowski,

I'm going to do an installation as soon as my backup cycle has finished and I'll confirm!

Thanks again,

Steve.

Just as an FYI, the SP2 is a full install. So you can install it right from that media. Download the latest rollup package and put it in the \updates folder of your installation point, and it was automatically install that during installation as well.

Cheers Guys.

Well I installed SP1 (don't have SP2 media) onto a Win2k8 member server and it worked fine. FYI for anyone I have 2 x Win2k8 GC's and 1 2003 GC in the domain with the FSMO roles only on the 2008 servers...

All working ok! :)

Thanks again,

Steve.

Exchange works fine on a 2k8 domain. There is no need for the 2003 GC.
I have installed exchange on a 2008 std single server running as DC. You will need to do the setup.com /Prepareschema as normal before the install. I didn't need to do the preparead or domain though. The install was a easy with no errors at all (unlike the Exch2010 install I did on 2k8 R2).

Actually, you don't need to do the /Prepareschema manually. It will get done automatically when using either the GUI or command line based setup. That being said, in bigger environments, it's a good idea to do all of the schema changes manually and wait for replication to finish before continuing.

Also, as always, it's recommended that Exchange be installed on member servers and not DCs, with the exception being SBS. While installing it on a DC is a supported scenario, it raises some security and stability concerns.

You are correct, it isn't the best idea, and I'd rather have a DC just being a DC, but on a single sever install you don't get much choice.
