I have SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition 8.00.194 RTM on my local Win XP SP2 machine. I have been using it for a while.

I have been trying to install the various service packs. I've downloaded all the service packs and extracted them. I started with SP4 since the instructions say it contains all the previous updates. Then I tried SP1.

The instructions say to run the setup.bat, but the only setups are setup.exe and when I run that I get "The instance name specified is invalid".

I have never done an update before. Can someone give me a hint as to how to do an update?

Thanks.

shot in the wind but if you've been running SQL Server 2K for awhile and you cannot get the SP's installed you may have the slammer virus. If this is the case try SP3 first and or read this. The link seems to be broken there also for the patch. here is a direct one

Actually this SQL Server instance is on a machine not even connected to a network, it's completely stand alone. No e-mail, no downloads, no internet. I don't think it's a virus. It might just be syntax on the install.

I'm getting the same error message on my home machine.

Thanks

Maybe you didn't install it with the default name? Open Enterprise Manager, drill down to where you see the instances. What is the instance name?

(local) or something else like ServerName\InstanceName???

I didn't use (local) I used TonyXP2 as the instance name to indicate what computer I'm using it on.

So if I don't use the default name, how to I specify it in the setup.exe syntax?

Something like "setup TonyXP2"?

Thanks.

You need servername\instance_name. In your case it would be computername\instance_name.

When you open Enterprise Manager and drill down to see the instance....what does it say?

TonyXP2\TonyXP2
(local)
something else?

That is how you have to enter it.

Did you ever see 'Plan Nine from Outer Space'?

I'm Stupid, Stupid, Stupid.

There are only four downloads from Microsoft for SQL Server 2000 SP4, and I picked the two that won't work on my system:

SQL2000.MSDE-KB884525-SP4-x86.EXE
SQL2000.KB884525-SP4-IA64.EXE

When I did a search again for "SQL Server" "Service Pack 4" through Google, I seemed to hit the download site and noticed that I should have downloaded the SQL2000.KB884525-SP4-x86.EXE version. The x86 was the one.

After extracting this I saw the Setup.bat file, ran that, and everything went like clockwork. A good install.

Sorry for the stupid mistake. The only excuse I can give is that I have never done a service pack install for SQL Sever before, and I don't know the difference between 86 and 64. Duh. Must be the microprocessor, eh?

Thanks again for the help.

CU all.

Microsoft doesn't make it easy do they? I'll bet you aren't the only one that got the wrong install file. It would be nice if they would put headers.

For MSDE:
SQL2000.MSDE-KB884525-SP4-x86.EXE

For x86:
SQL2000.KB884525-SP4-x86.EXE

Or something similar, giving better directions as to how to determine which file is the one you need.

Congrats on resolving your issue.
