I searched the microsoft knowledgebase but they have nothing about this I can find. I am trying to install a medical application on 8 new Compaq EVO's with win XP pro installed. 6 of them installed fine but 2 of them keep kicking out with this 1721 error. I ran every update microsoft had on them but I continue to get this message. The medical app people have never seen this and they have no clue what to do either.

Anyone ever see this?

Try:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type "msiexec /unregister" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.
3. Click Start, and then click Run.
4. In the Open box, type "msiexec /regserver" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.

Hi there,

Is it possible that your Microsoft installer has been corrupted/deleted? The following comes from another newsgroup (annoyances.org) and seems to apply to 9x machines, but it sounds like your problem:

Thank you phantom it was a hijack thanks a lot.I used a variety of utilities to help restore my system, amongst them was norton antivirus. It seems I have another problem with that, every time i try to install it (because I made a mistake and uninstalled it) there is a windows message saying Error 1721.There is a problem with this windows installer package.A program required for this install to complete could not be run condact the support personnel or package vendor. I tried to install it to a different computer ( a friends pc) and worked fine, thus showing that in the process of removing the hijacker something went wrong.I had a troijan virus as well and removed it,but now somethings wrong.Everything else seems to work fine.I would appreciate any ideas, what is error 1721? thanks a lot

I found today that there's a Microsoft uninstall repair cleanup utility called MSICUU.EXE.
It's described in Microsoft's technote Q238413 on their website.

If you read thge MS article (kb238413), it lists steps to find and verify what version of the msi installer you have.

Not sure if this is the problem or not, but may not hurt to try right?

Hi,
I have done a quick scan of the web and these errors relate to unavailable ports and TCP/UDP.
A few questions:
Are u an administrator on the machines?
Is the application a web-network based application or is it a local install?
Have you checked the PC's for spyware, virus'?
Do these two machines have any firewalls running?

I tried the first suggestion of running msiexec /unregister but I had no luck. The 2 PC's are in a network environment. The software is being installed locally and I am using the administrator account to install it.
I am getting ready to check for the trojan/spyware problem now and I'll let you knwo how that goes.

Thanks all

You should enable logging of the installation to help you identify what is the underlying problem.

you should initiate logging on the command line by executing the msiexec.exe command with the following options:

msiexec.exe /l [i|w|e|a|r|u|c|m|o|p|v|+|!|*] logfile

where:

/l is the switch that turns on logging.

logfile is the name of the file to receive the logging information.

Option Information Provided
i Status messages
w Non-fatal warnings
e All error messages
a Start up actions
r Action-specific records
u User requests
c Initial user interface parameters
m Out-of-memory or fatal exit information
o Out-of-disk-space messages
p Terminal properties
v Verbose output
+ Append to existing file
! Send each line to the log
* Log all information except for what the verbose option generates.

I ran norton corp ed and found nothing, I also ran ad-aware to look for spyware but found nothing as well. I ran the microsoft installer cleanup utility and still cant install.
At this point, since we have a large number of these pc's throughout the building I plan on installing the medical app on 2 other units and if it works I will switch them out with the 2 I'm having a problem with. Once I get them switched out i'm gonna keep trying things on them. There has to be a solution to this somewhere. Please continue to offer solutions if you have them and as i get time I'll try them.
Thanks

The Windows Installer help file, msi.chm, says:

Error 1721: There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action: [2], location: [3], command: [4]

You could have a look inside the msi to see if it has any custom actions in the end.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.
