Changing the passcode is not different whether locally or remotely.
I don't know the limit (if there is one). Basically anything you put in is converted via a security algorythm to 4 bytes of code (Max 65536 passcodes). This means that realistically that multiple passcodes will yeild the same 4 bytes. I've actually proven this theory and found 2 different passcodes that would work for the same user name.
So don't get overly complicated, it's not worth the time or effort.
