Installed router so that laptop computer has internet.
Laptop has VISTA for os
Host desktop is XP pro
Is there a chance that vista would undermine display properties?
Host computer was not set to babysit the laptop during online sessions, full access of host.
Nothing malicious by laptop user.
I am presently stuck with 4 bit colour and 480X640

??

NO... the vista computer should have nothing to do with the XP machine at all... when it is hooked up through a router or switch...

on the XP machine go to device manager and check the status of your GFX card... is there a yellow exclamation mark? double click it and see what the applet says is the problem...

also check your event viewer for error messages...

reinstall the gfx drivers...

You didn't say what kind of connection you'd got to the router from the XP machine. If it's ethernet cable, then it's vaguely possible the XP PC got a blast of static which upset the video when the RJ45 was plugged in...

If you remove the router and connect the Cable Modem to the XP, does it work then?

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.
