I just installed a 120 g sata drive to replace my 40 g ide drive. Both with win xp pro.
Need to transfer files from old drive to new drive, but:

if I try to boot with the ide drive connected (in all the configurations i've tried), the Sata Drive will not boot as the boot drive... (it will .. only if I disconnect the ide drive completely), but the system will not boot at all with the ide connected.. It goes to the windows logo screen (trying to boot the ide drive), then quick blue screen and restarts the PC... This has been the case since i installed the sata drivers on the clean install for the sata drive... and even now when i disconnect the cables for the sata drive to boot from the ide alone, the same blue screen/restart happens...

I need to:

Transfer the files from the old drive to the sata drive..how?

would like to:

Use both drives with the sata as the boot drive and the ide as a secondary storage drive on the same system (but not necessary)?

Thanks for your help!
Michael

Are you using an add-in PCI card for SATA or a connector right off your motherboard?

What's the make/model of your motherboard?

If SATA is built-in, then it should be part of the boot order in your BIOS that you can change. Let us know...

I believe I just fixed my problem... sorry and thanks...maybe this will help someone else...

I connect direct to motherboard.. however... didn't realize that in my bios, my boot order I had to select SCSI as my first boot option... didn't realize or understand the SCSI and sata relationship...

Yep, that's it! Glad you got it sorted...[tab][thumbsup2]
