I recently installed a 2nd monitor and after i formatted and partitioned it i plugged in my old hard drive. Now in CMOS my old hard drive doesn't appear and my new one has a funky name like Y3402q_0234. When I restarted nothing would show on my monitor anymore. This has happened on occasion in the past but after a few restarts it usually works but not this time. HELP!

Specs:
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
EPOX KT333+
GeForce 4 Ti4200
Samsung 80gb 7200rpm
Maxtor 80gb 7200rpm
512mb DDR RAM

I recently installed a 2nd monitor and after i formatted and partitioned it" - you mean harddisk?!
check cabels, jumper settings (master/slave).
reset bios and let the drives auto detect.
it can be your psu is to weak to startup with 2 hdd´s.

Yes, I meant hard drives. My PSU is strong enou gh to run 2 hdd's since it already has before. I checked all the cables and they were fine and the jumpers are set to right settings. When you said reset bios u mean my cmos?

yes, cmos reset (i suppose you tried that already).
some hdd just wont work together (i even had this with two maxtor drives).
unplugg the new drive and see if the old one is recognized by bios (to make sure its the drives that create the prob), then do it the other way around.
if this is working and they still wont together you have incompatible drives.
good luck

You could put the drives on separate IDE controllers (ie, connect one as master on Primary, the other as master on the Secondary). Incompatibility shouldn't matter then.

I got it working, turns out my master hd wasnt set to master but to master/slave factory default. The only problem I have now is that nothing shows on my monitor more than every once in a while when i boot. any ideas what is wrong with it?

psu/ram? What do you mean by it?
bad ram or need more perhaps?

i have a 350w power supply and 512ddr ram. you dont think 350w is enough?

350w psu might be ok, when it gives you enough juice on 5/12v. recommended are for 5v/30a and 12v/20a (the you are on the save side). what grafikboard do you use (extra power connector to psu)?

"This has happened on occasion in the past but after a few restarts it usually works but not this time. HELP!" - restarts until the caps are loaded, then the current is lower and psu does it.
this isnt for sure but the solution i would try first is a stronger psu

I have a GeForce4 Ti4200. I only have it on standard setting, no overclocking. It doesn't have an extra power ocnnector to psu, just standard throught the mobo. is there a cord to supply poewr straight to the grafix card?

if your card is not complaining it should be ok like it is. newer cards have a connector for power supplied by the psu, but then they complain if you forget to connect it.

if the failure shows often when the pc was off for a while and not when you just reboot then its the psu, opt for a stronger one and make sure its not only saying 450w, check currents on 5/12v be 30/20a.
