Try running 'startx' to see if you can start the Xserver. If startx gives you the Gnome or KWin environment that you are looking for, then you want to set your default runlevel to be 5, rather than 3. The default runlevel is defined in /etc/inittab.
If you get errors when running startx, then you need to resolve those before you can operate at runlevel 5. Most of those errors can be resolved by editing your XF86Config or XF86Config-4 file, but you will need to read up on that for the specifics of your video card and LCD display.
