I installed a new hard drive (a wester digital, WD2500KS). I booted my computer and it started at normal speed, check my computer and saw my 2nd drive sitting there, explored it and everything seemed okay. BUT THEN! haha. I shut my computer off, turned my computer back on, this time it took about 4 or 5 minutes to boot to windows. I go to check my computer and the hdd is not there anymore. I checked disk management and its not there also. Im not sure what happend. Here is what I did to install my hard drive.

Opened up my computer. Sony Vaio VGC-RB50.

Took the new hd and put it in the brackets, and plugged in both cords. (Power and whatever the other one is thats connect to my original drive, I also plugged it in on the next available slot on that cord.

Screwed it back shut and started the computer.

I did not set it to master/slave (though i want it to be a slave) because I read somewhere that more modern motherboards and HDD dont need to do this anymore? I also did not bother because I have no idea where to put the jumper.

Like I said it worked 100% with first boot, but not anymore.

Thanks for the help in advance.

It appears that both HD's are IDE, and if so then they both have to be jumpered. You can either jumper the boot HD as Master, and the 2nd HD as Slave, or jumper both as CS(Cable Select).
If the 2nd HD still is not recognized in Windows, then see if it's seen in BIOS, If not, then make sure its cables are securely connected. If no luck, then try a different known working IDE cable. If still no good, then see if it's seen in another system. If not, then it may be bad, RMA it for a replacement.
If it's seen in BIOS, then connect a different power cable to it. If no luck, then it may be bad.

If you want to use CS, you really need to be using an 80 wire/40pin cable.
The jumper settings should be on a sticker on top of the HDD, you also need to check your first HDD & see if it requires the jumper set to master with slave present. This is assuming you are using the same IDE channel for both drives.
