Installation trouble

I had project 98 installed on a nt4 w/s. that i wanted to upgrade to project 2002 standard version. i removed the 98 version via add/remove programs from control panel, but when i try and install the 2002 version i get the message that a previous version has been detected and needs to be removed before installation can begin for the 2002 version. not sure how to proceed from here.
