Installation Question: Do I Need X-Windows? 1

I have a server installation with Gnome. As far as I can tell, everything I'm ever going to do is either through a menu or through the command prompt (course, I'm a complete newbie with Linux so make your judgement here.)

When selecting the installation packages with Red Hat 7.3 there are two at the very top, "Classic X-Windows" and, crap, can't remember the exact name, but it's another newer implementation of X-Windows supplied by RH.

I'm going to install PHP, Apache, MySQL, and phpMyAdmin to make a little webserver to experiment with.

Do I need to bother with either of the X-Windows packages or can I just skip over them completely? Why would I select them versus Gnome or KDE? Is it just to save disk space?

Thanks in advance for your help!

If you are going to be using it as a web server only then you don't need the X-windows system at all. If you are going to develop some web pages on your own then you will need the X-windows sytem to view those pages. as for which one to use, I believe the difference is the Xfree86 server if that is the case you need to check the Xfree86.org website and make sure that your card is supported.

Hope this helps

I assume the Gnome sort of sits on top of x-windows, correct? Meaning, if I do not select either of the x-windows packages but do select Gnome then the necessary files will be loaded. I mean, they're not going to let you select Gnome and then it won't work, right?

That is correct RedHat will install the X-Windows system if you choose Gnome or KDE Desktop envirorments and will set it up. It will ask you to test your video card, I strongly recomend this if you have not Configured a XF86Config file before. The again RH comes with the Xconfigurator to configure your video card. but if you choose to boot up with a graphical interface and you have a bad video setting you won't even be able to log in and you will need a boot disk to boot your machine.
