I cannot install SQL 2000 Developers Edition on a Windows
2000 Pro. Install fails giving the following messsge:
"A previous installation created pending file operations
on the machine. You must restart the computer......"
After I restart the computer and start the installation
again, the same message appears and the installation
fails regardless of how many times I restart the computer.

Does anyone know how to get out of this loop???

Jay:
Thanks for your tip. I'm having some trouble actually
downloading the MSIZAP.EXE. The link you gave me gives info
about it but no download.
Also, all the registry entries refering to MSSQL have already been deleted so there's no way for me to tell
what the GUID of the MSDE is once I get a handle on the
MSUZAP.EXE.

I'll keep looking.

Still in limbo :(

Open REGEDIT and find the following key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

Delete any PendingFileRenameOperations values in this key.

If you want to get the best answer for your question read faq183-874 and faq183-3179.

Terry:
Thanks for the tip. I checked the registry value you
suggested and there were no values in that key.
At this point I've decided to put the SQL DEV ED on another computer until I can figure out what's going on.

Thanks again Jay AND Terry for your help.
