I'm trying to install Oracle 8i Personal Edition Client on WinNT. However, after a select my destination directory, I get the following error:

Invalid staging error. There are no top level components for Windows NT available for install from this staging error

What exactly does this mean and what do I need to install?

Many thanks,

elziko

You can check the following:

1) make sure you continue to use the installer that is included with the PO8i media.
2) check the Oracle_Home you are attempting to install to and make sure there are no spaces or special characters in the directory.
The C:\Program Files\Oracle\... is not a valid Oracle_Home for example.
3) If you are attempting a 'Custom' install, please try a 'Typical' install.

You can check also the installation log in C:\Program Files\Oracle\Inventory\logs.

Thanks, tried all above. No help.

Anyone know what "top level components" are? They are something I have never come across!

Cheers

Yeah, very obvious. The difference between the Win98 and WinNT CD are so minimal you need microscope eyes to notice it!

Also, the error messages provided by oracle are so abstract, the are close to useless. A simple:

"This installation is not suitable for Windows 9x" would have sufficed. Thanks for your suggestions,
