To be honest, I have never worried too much about the various installation options available with MySQL - it has always just installed and worked.

I originally downloaded a version 4.0.20a zip file, unzipped it and I have the contents on a CD. I then installed this on a W2K PC here for development, doing a standard installation and starting it simply by running winMySQLAdmin.exe. About a year ago, I did exactly the same installation on a W2K Server and this has worked perfectly ever since.

However, I have just done the same installation on a W2003 Server and it does not work. It runs for a while and then I loose contact with it. If I reboot the server, it seems to work for a while, but then stops and if I go into Services and try and start it, it comes up with a message saying 'unable to start process'.

I am currently looking at the install options and other info on the MySQL web site, but does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get it running?

Thanks. I would appreciate any thoughts.

By the way, I have noticed two things:

1. If I run 'net start mysql' from the command line, I get 'System error 1067 has occurred', which seems to be associated with an invalid my.conf file. However, I don't have one.

2. I also see that in the \data directory, I have a \furq and \vuln directory, which I never created and also two files called nc.exe and vdqeo.dll which are not in any of the other MySQL installations I have seen.
