I am attempting to install the SQL Remote Agent for Veritas BackupExec V8.6. When I come up to the window asking for the Product Activation Number I enter the code and the agent shows up in the window.

Clicking Next I go to the screen that allows you to select which agent you wish to download to the remote server. The only option I have is Remote Agent. SQL does not show.

Thinking it might be on some other screen I continue by clicking next until I get to the option to select which server you want to download this agent to.

I am running these functions from the server that has BackupExec installed. I have installed Microsoft SQL client server on this system as instructed.

What I am missing? I know it is something simple, but can not seem to find it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

Which option and license do you really have?

Remote Agent and Agent for MS SQL are not the same thing. Remote Agent allows you to do backups of a remote database. Agent for MS SQL allows you to backup MS SQL Servers just like the 'native' SQL Server backup.

SQLBill,

Not sure what you mean by option or license, but here goes. This information comes off the Software License Certificate I received from Veritas.

Product: (1)Backup Exec Windows NT/2000 V8.6 - SQL AGT LE
(3)Backup Exec Windows NT/2000 Vol Lic. Remote AGT NT OPT

I have installed the remote agent on the server that contains the SQL Database (Server 5). I performed that function from the media server where Backup Exec V8.6 is installed (Server 4). I am attempting to install SQL agent from Server 4 to Server 5. On Server 4 I installed SQL client software because I read it was required for the process to work.

Thanks for your response and help. If you need anyother information, please let me know.

You have the OPTIONs, that's what the software is called. But do you have the licenses? Those are the number codes that you enter when installing Backup Exec and any options. They are normally different numbers for each option.

Yes, I have the activation number. I enter it into the appropriate screen. It shows as one of the available options after I click on add. After that point, I do not see it again therefore I cannot direct it to server5.

Are you sure you are supposed to download the SQL Agent to the SQL Server? I believe it's just supposed to be on the Backup Server with BE. I could be wrong but that's the way I believe it's supposed to be.

To tell you the truth, I am wondering that myself. I have done additional checking and:

"The SQL Agent is not on the list of possible components to install. To install the SQL agent, select the option button "Install Backup Exec software or options on this computer. The structured query language (SQL) agent is actually installed on the VERITAS Backup Exec server (or media server)."

Found this at //seer.support.veritas.com/docs/240200.htm

Will try this and update you/group. Thanks for your help.

Best of luck...

BTW, I know that since you paid for the SQL Agent you will want to use it...but make sure you test it.

Do the following steps to test it:

-Backup the database using the SQL Agent
-Detach the database and copy the .mdf and .ldf files to another location (copy don't move)
-Restore the database using the SQL Agent
-Attach the database if necessary
-Check the data, is it correct? Did the backup and restore work?
-If it did work, great. If not, detach the database then move the copies of the .mdf and .ldf files back to their original location and attach the database.

We had a problem with SQL Agent and Backup Exec. But we are running on a cluster and met a very specific case where Veritas said BE wouldn't work without a hotfix. Unfortunately the hotfix doesn't fix previous backups, only those backups after the fix is applied.

So, the point of this is that you make sure you test the backup and restore to make sure it works and that you are comfortable with it. We weren't/aren't so now I'm doing 'native' SQL Server backups (creating .bak files) and saving those files to tape via Veritas.

I have a lab that duplicates my production environment. I do not trust Microsoft after being bitten a few times, therefore we try to test everything.

Thanks for the help....
