hp open view system.
the server is taking the clock source from the gps
receiver, HP 55300 A. Could you let know
how do i go about to install ntp on this
machines. i will have 8 clients connocted to the server.
thanks !

hi again,
sorry but am getting lost at the web site.
kindly the exact URL please. cheers !

Hey there
NTP is usually installed by default with the Operating System check for the file /etc/ntp.conf
Please let me know.
Best regards

well yes, there is ntp.cond in /etc. well ntp is working fine under the local machine clock. when i add in 127.127.26.1, it doenst take the time from the gps receiver. when i put in a ntpq -p..i get 'no process id running' but the xntpd daemon is already running. ( ps -ef | grep ntp) i think itssomething to do with my serial port. i have connected the gps receiver in serial port 1, how do i do the link ? it is it /usr/bin/ln-s /dev/tty0p0 /dev/hpgps1 ? how do i verify this then ? thx !

Ah, now I think you have given a little more information we may be able to find what is wrong, I am no expert in this area and probably cannot give you an answer, but I think it best to describe you problem a little more fully.
For example:
The GPS reciever is connected to the main server via a serial connection? The main server however cannot get the time from the GPS reciever is that right? Here is an entry from one of my Linux Boxes which may help a little more:

##
## Radio and modem clocks by convention have addresses in the
## form 127.127.t.u, where t is the clock type and u is a unit
## number in the range 0-3.
##
## Most of these clocks require support in the form of a
## serial port or special bus peripheral. The particular
## device is normally specified by adding a soft link
## /dev/device-u to the particular hardware device involved,
## where u correspond to the unit number above.
##
## Generic DCF77 clock on serial port (Conrad DCF77)
## Address: 127.127.8.u
## Serial Port: /dev/refclock-u
##
## (create soft link /dev/refclock-0 to the particular ttyS?)
##

So do you have the Serial Port Entry in your /etc/ntp.conf file.

Or you problem is connecting the other machine to the time server?

Best regards

hi again, well firstly, the problem is connecting the ntp server to the gps receiver.
in my ntp.conf file...i only have one entry which is:
Server 127.127.26.1
i dont have a serial port entry in there.
can you tell me what exactly should be put in place there.
however as mentioned previously, i had already made a softlink from the server port to the gps device (dev/tty0p0 /dev/hpgps1 ). the tip command doesnt work in Hp-UX. any idea whats an alternative command to talk to the serial port ? thx !

I am afraid I don't know what you should put in but I suggest you have a look at the documetation. At least you know what parameter you may be looking for now.
Also within the xntpd man pages there is information on this and other ways to test it.
Best regards
