I read the reame and it says..
3.4 Install MSDE 2000 Release A
Run Desktop Engine Setup.exe to install MSDE 2000 Release A.

I click the setup.exe and i get a msgbox saying...

>A strong SA password is required for security reasons.
>Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same. Refer to the >readme blah blah

I read the readme and found the following...

>Parameter Description
>SAPWD="AStrongPassword" Specifies a strong password to be >assigned to the sa administrator login.
>INSTANCENAME="InstanceName" Specifies the name of the >instance. If INSTANCENAME is not specified, Setup installs >a default instance.

I put these in the ini? if so whats the instancename for, what do I put there?
SAPWD="AStrongPassword"
INSTANCENAME="InstanceName"

Do I need anything else in the ini?

Ok now I read a little further and I find this..

Requesting a Setup Log
You will need a verbose log to verify that the installation succeeded or to assist in debugging any problems that occur.

To generate a verbose log, specify /L*v <LogFileName>. <LogFileName> is the name of a log file where Setup will record all of its actions. If you do not specify a path as part of the name, the log file is created in the current folder. If you are executing Setup from a compact disc, you must specify the full path to a folder on the hard disk of your computer.

Where do I 'specify' this so I can see the setup log after installation?

Anything else I need to 'specify' anywhere? Thanks.

the server you install can be a default instance in which case you connect using svrname or a named instance in which case you connect via svrname\instname.
You can have a single defeult instance and many named instances. That's what the INSTANCENAME parameter is for - you can add it for a named instance or leave it out for a default.

You specify the log on the setup command.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.
Beer is not cold and it isn't fizzy.

Where do I define the servername and username?

>You specify the log on the setup command.

Where is the setup command?

What the **** is wrong with these *******'s from microsoft that write this **** they call instructions?

I feel better now :)

For someone who has installed SQL before, this would be pretty straightforward. And take 10 min's of your so precious time. I put a lot into this site and cant get any help on something such as this?

The installation is asking for you to define a strong password for the SA account. SA is the System Administrator and is GOD as far as SQL goes. A Strong Passowrd is one that uses mixed case and numbers. For example "Dfem&22df$*" is a strong password. The username can be sa. Enter a strong password and you should be fine. As far as I know, no ini file should be modified during the setup.

Good Luck.

Thanks for your reply SQLRickster

When I run the setup.exe,I get a msgbox that says..

>A strong SA password is required for security reasons.
>Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same. Refer to the >readme blah blah

And the setup.exe close's. (no command prompt, nothing)

The readme talks about ini settings: password, instancename, targetdir, datadir, securitymode etc etc

Any ideas?

I did not notice that you are installing MSDE. If you downloaded the latest and greatest from M$ the instructions are:

Instructions
Click the Download link to start the download.
Do one of the following:
To start extracting files required to install MSDE immediately, click Open or Run this program from its current location.

To copy the download to your computer for installation at a later time, click Save or Save this program to disk.
If you choose Save this program to disk, locate the file where you saved it, and double-click the .exe file to extract all files required to install MSDE on your computer.

After extracting the MSDE installation files, open an MS-DOS command prompt and change to the directory where you extracted the files. (I assume that you are familiar with the dos command CD) MSDE extracts to C:\sql2ksp3\MSDE by default. Run the following command to set up MSDE for Visual Studio .NET. Replace <YOUR SA PASSWORD> with the systems administrator's password that you would like to use: [This is the part about a STRONG PASSWORD]

Setup.exe /qb+ INSTANCENAME=VSDOTNET DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=1 SAPWD=<YOUR SA PASSWORD>

These instructions are for the DOT NET version. Naturally if you have a different version the path is different. The garbage about the "instance" means the name that you want to use to connect through ADO. I always use the machine name. If you are going to have more than on instance running then you will have to be cerative.

Hope this helps:
