Hi all,

I am trying to install & configure Oracle XE on 'Open SUSE Linux 2.6.31.5-0.1 default i686' VM image.

When attempting login to Oracle XE via Web browser, the following error message:

"Unable to Connect, Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 127.0.0.1:8080"

When attempting to connect via SQL* Plus:

"ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27101: Shared memory realm does not exist
Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory"

Running the following command from XTERM:

/etc/init.d/oracle-xe start:

Started Oracle Net Listener
Started Oracle Database 10g Express Edition Instance

Running the following command from XTERM:

/etc/init.d/oracle-xe status:

"Service summary.....
Service "PLSExtProc" has 1 instance(s).
Instance "PLSExtProc", Status UNKNOWN, has 1 handler(s) for thie service.....
The command completed sucessfully"

I have followed the installation instructions from here:

Any advice would be extremely appreciated.

Regards,
Chris

Hi Bill,

I cannot start up the Oracle instance. The below error message is received in SQL*Plus when attemping to connect as sysdba:

"ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27101: Shared memory realm does not exist
Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory"

Any further suggestions would be appreciated.
Regards
Chris

Is your ORACLE_SID set?

The internet - allowing those who don't know what they're talking about to have their say.

are the oracle services running, oracle wont start unless they are.

Hi Ken,

Yes, I think ORACLE_SID has been defined:

echo $ORACLE_SID
XE

Hi Bill,

The enviroment is SUSE Linux.

From within SQL*PLUS, I have cannot perfom 'startup' command.

Should be starting the services from somewhere else?

Many Thanks.Regards

Chris

I don't think you should be trying to start your database in sqlplus, even if you weren't getting the error. If I am correctly reading the installation document you provide, the command that should have started your database is

Code:
/etc/init.d/oracle-xe start

But you already tried that and the subsequent status command indicates that your listener is running but isn't monitoring any database. I infer that the "oracle-xe start" command was only partially successful.

The question is why. Unfortunately, you are in the process of installing and configuring Oracle XE on a new server. That provides an almost unlimited ways for things to go wrong. You would have to check all the installation, database creation, and startup logs to find where the first error occurred.

Your main clue right now is the "Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory". The documentation I've found on that error is rather non-specific. It can result from anything ranging from a missing or misplaced file on database startup to incorrect settings of linux kernel parameters.

If I were you I would spend some time investigating the available log files for errors. At this point we don't even know whether your database ever got created successfully.

I'm guessing he skipped the part where you set-up the loopback network connection (127.0.0.1).
