If I install Windows 2000 over Windows XP does it give the option to save all existing files or does it format your hard drive? I have a Windows XP machine with a corrupt registry that won't boot and need the files from it.
Never tried that, I would pull the drive an throw it into a booting 2k/xp pc, and copy your files.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.
If you preform an update from a 2000 to XP
all system files are replaced, but the intstalled software
will stay installed and your data will not be lost.
You will be prompted to format the drive but you can ignore it.
If you choose to copy all installation files to the HD, you will not be able to format the HD ofcourse
