If I install Windows 2000 over Windows XP does it give the option to save all existing files or does it format your hard drive? I have a Windows XP machine with a corrupt registry that won't boot and need the files from it.

Thanks for all replies!

Never tried that, I would pull the drive an throw it into a booting 2k/xp pc, and copy your files.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Did you ever try the "Last known good configuration" option from the Safe Mode screen of Startup options?

Have you looked at your options via the Recovery Console?

An easy to follow recovery console description when unable to start computer due to corrupt registry.

This is a layman's version of Q307545 in simple language.

You could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

You can do the same with XP. Don't install any unnecessary program, just keep the parallel installation as simple as possible.

Another choice would be something like this - BartPE which is a mini XP running on just CD but able to access the hard drives.

If you want to replace XP with 2000 a format would be necessary before you could install 2000. You can't upgrade XP with 2000.

hi,

If you preform an update from a 2000 to XP
all system files are replaced, but the intstalled software
will stay installed and your data will not be lost.

You will be prompted to format the drive but you can ignore it.

If you choose to copy all installation files to the HD, you will not be able to format the HD ofcourse :)
