I'm starting to learn how to install UNIX. The red hat manual says the LILO and the root directory has to be loaded below cylinder 1023. On a 30 Gb hard drive i think this will be well below the first partition that I have. I have two partitions. 20 and a 10 Gb with nothing in the top 10 Gb. Does this mean i have to repartition the 20 Gb so i can put the boot files in the lower 20 Gb? I get some indication that this was pertaining to the older BIOS that couldn't address memory above Cyl 1023. But I'm not sure. Please point me to a document that will explain this in more detail.

Thanks Burr Stephens

Yeah -- it does I'm afraid,if you want to use LILO that is.

I use loadlin though and that seems to work just fine, lets me pick a menu option from a config.sys menu and start linux. There's a discussion of this in the Linux (Server) forum.
