I have a SQL server 2005 and need to install an instance of 2000 on it for an application. Can I install SQL 2000 on the server and create a named instance? Just make sure I install it to a different directory as 2005 and not the default one?

You can install it in the default directory. Just make sure to install it as a named instance.
