Hello,

I want to install SCO OpenServer 5.0.4. I try with CDRom (see my previous post : thread58-718658 )
But i think the media is broken...
But i've got 3 tape : /dev/u /dev/root and /dev/boot
It's the first time I use tape and OSR.
The problem is : How can I reinstall the OS with these tapes?
What is the goot defbootstr to boor from tape?

Thanks in advance
Betan
P.S. : I try to put the tape /dev/boot/ into the driver tape but it's write : error no boot disk...

Yes, I saw this faq but the problem is my root disk is broken.
I search a solution to create a root disk. In fact i just have the tape, a boot disk, the btld and the package efs

So is there a solution ????

I starting to get a little confused...
does a "root" disk mean the main hard drive or one of the emergency "root and boot" diskettes?

These "tapes" that you have are most likely tar or cpio backups that will not be bootable.

Back to trying to install 5.0.4 on the ml370:
you may need to limit the amount of memory sco sees during installation .
mem=1m-16m
you may need to reduce the size of the logical volume that boots to less than 17 GB.

make sure you have the btld of 5.34 or later.

There were also some other issues with the ml370 and 5.0.5 that may apply to 5.0.4.
see:

I mean i haven't root diskette, it's tar backups, i've got the btld 5.4
I will try to limit amount of memory. You say I may reduce the logical volume...So how can I do because I've 2 * 18.2GB hard drive (raid 0+1)?

Thanks,
Betan

ok....it is not that easy to create a "root" diskette unless you have a second similar machine running.

an alternative is to boot from the cdrom:

I have not played with the 5i controller but it would entail setting options within the controller itself.

Some news :
I've found two root diskette. Now the problem! If a reboot with the first root diskette, the server tells me : 602-diskette boot record error.
If I put the second root diskette, it tells me : no ntldr

Thanks in advance and sorry for my ignorance.
Betan
P.S. : may be it's not the right procedure...If I reboot with the "boot diskette", when does I put the "root diskette"?

The boot diskette loads to the end and then instructs you to insert the root.

The boot diskette don't tell me to insert root diskette...

The boot diskette show me the prompt "boot:"
(So I can make defbootstr to set up hard drive/cdrom/...)
Is it a bad boot diskette?

I 've made a new boot disk with a image from the web (oss463b.n0). So, under w2k, I use rawrite to make a bootable diskette. But when I use it, it don't instruct me to insert root diskette! So is there any option to resolve it?

->For tools option, it's doesn't work : at the boot prompt, I type tools and i've got the screen "Identifying the installation media device" : so i've got the error -> error opening vol.000.000 ...
->It's will be hard to try, the cdrom, on another PC but I will try to find one...
->Could I create emergency diskette without SCO is install?
(do you understand my question?)

Betan

It sounds more and more like your cdrom is toast....
No you can't create the emergency diskette's without SCO being installed.

So to sump up(we need it) :

I've got a root diskette (emergency)
a boot generic diskette
backup tapes (root/boot/u)
a osr5.0.4 cdrom maybe bad

The emergency diskette are created while OSR installation.
There is no way ro recover emergency diskette from another OSR of somebody?

So is there a solution? :-(

Moreover,

I can't obtain another PC...
To verify something : in the directory /opt/archives/ I've got those files
VOL.000.000 : 25ko -r-xr-xr-x
VOL.000.001 : 7430Ko -r-xr-xr-x
VOL.000.002 : 4525Ko -r-xr-xr-x
VOL.000.003 : 4104Ko -r-xr-xr-x
VOL.000.004 : 3278Ko -r-xr-xr-x
...
VOL.000.343
VOL.0000.FIL
VOL.0000.SUM
VOL.0001.FIL
VOL.0001.SUM

Is it ok?

Some checksum :
16152 50 VOL.000.000
47611 14860 VOL.000.001
41163 9050 VOL.000.002
45212 8207 VOL.000.003

my copy show 1034 files in /opt/archives.

Sounds like no solution at this point. To copy the tape you need tar. That would be from a boot/root emergency set. To make those you need installed OS. To have that you need to do the install. And if you could do the install from CD you wouldn't need the tape.

Since you evidently can read the CD on another machine it sounds like your drive is bad. You could verify that the files are readable by copying them on another machine. If they read and copy there your CD is good and you have a problem on the unix box CD.
