Hey all, I'm trying to install Exchange Server 2007 on a Server 2008 machine and I keep failing out in the Client Access Role Prerequisites section. Here's the error message:

Error:
Unable to read data from the Metabase. Ensure that Microsoft Internet Information Services is installed.

Googling this error gives several responses pointing to:

but uninstalling and reinstalling IIS doesn't help. FWIW the Hub Transport role installs just fine. Any ideas on where to go or what to do to get this installed?

Thanks,

Joe B

People3, I'm hesitant to run a script on an Exchange 2007 server when that script was written for an Exchange 2010 server. I will look into it and see if there are any caveats.

Thanks,

Joe B

I ran into this myself. Open up PoweShell by right clicking it and select Run as Administrator so it is elevated.

Next execute the following commands:

Import-Module ServerManager

Set-Service NetTcpPortSharing -StartupType Automatic

Add-WindowsFeature NET-Framework,RSAT-ADDS,Web-Server,Web-Basic-Auth,Web-Windows-Auth,Web-Metabase,Web-Net-Ext,Web-Lgcy-Mgmt-Console,WAS-Process-Model,RSAT-Web-Server,Web-ISAPI-Ext,Web-Digest-Auth,Web-Dyn-Compression,NET-HTTP-Activation,RPC-Over-HTTP-Proxy -Restart

Note that the server will reboot after the last command.

I hope that helps.

Regards,

Mark

markdmac, running the second command in your post kept giving me an error.

people3, here's a star because following the instructions about half-way down that page worked.

Thanks,

Joe B

Ok, maybe I gave that star a little too quickly. I made it as far as the first install step and this error popped up:

Copy Exchange Files
Failed

Error:
Installing product D:\exchangeserver.msi failed. Fatal error during installation. Error code is 1603. Last error reported by the MSI package is 'Module C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Bin\ExSMime.dll failed to register. HRESULT -2147010895. Contact your support personnel.'.

Fatal error during installation

Any ideas? I'm running off to Google it.

Thanks,

Joe B

Wow, that error gives me one return. Now I have to find my answer somewhere in 152 pages of questions.

Sigh.

Did you run setup.com /forestprep first?

I hope that helps.

Mark

markdmac, no I didn't. BUT, I just found some information saying that I need to install at least Exchange SP1 on a server running Server 2008 R2. I'm working on that right now.

Thanks,

Joe B

markdmac, running setup.com /forestprep gives me a "not a valid command line option." I tried it from both Windows PowerShell (won't run at all) and the command prompt. I haven't tried to install the newer Exchange yet. I'll do that now and see what happens.

Thanks,

Joe B
