I am an intern helping a medium sized company add a new server. They love NetWare, and upon ariving at this institution, I was quite unfimaliar with it. I need some resources to help me understand the install process better. We will be replacing an exisiting server with the new one and then relocating the old one. I have looked at Novell's site, but it seems as though it is not complete in its description of what needs to happen and where certain files are located. If anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it!

Hi -

We migrated from a 4.11 sp9 server to 5.1 SBE - 5.1 comes with the 'Migration Wizard' - which migrates most of the Novell/NDS settings & configs from an old server to a new one.

I've only been involved with one migration, so can't speak from a lot of experience - but if you have under 25 employees - it may be easier to build your new server/settings from the ground up, rather than using the Migration Wizard - and having to 'tweak' all settings after the fact.

If I were to do it again - I would build the server from scratch! Forget the Migration Wizard.

Good Luck~

It depends. If you are going from 4.1 to 5.1, you can use the accelerated upgrade wizard that is located on the 5.1 CD. If you are upgrading from any other flavor of 5 or you are just replacing hardware go to NWCONFIG (or Install for 4.1) > --- Directory Service Options >-- Directory Backup and Restore Options >-- Save local DS information prior to Hardware upgrade. When prompted, save it to one of the server volumes and copy it to your workstation when it's done. Later, create an entirely new server on new hardware and install it into a temporary tree. After installing applications from the old server and patching it up, burn the NDS info that you copied onto your workstation onto CD (most likely it won't fit on a floppy) and do the reverse>>> Go back to Directory service Options > Directory Backup and Restore options > Load local DS information after hardware upgrade. Mount the CDrom in the server and then point Netware 5.1 to the file burned on the CDROM, and then you should be done. Restore all the files from tape backup after that and the attributes should be restored with them after NDS is back on the server.
