I've just won a Netra X1 in a competition (which I have no recollection of entering) and have not the slightest idea of what to do with it. I have all pc'c and MS stuff here.

There is a thread about'Help required with installation of E220 server'. Do the same rules apply?

My other question is. What on earth am I going to do with this thing that looks like a huge laptop. It says it has solaris installed, does this include any useful stuff that I can use ( a web server perhaps), or is it 'just' and operating system.

Guess who has never used one of these before.

You could always toss it up on eBay.. :)

An X1 would have come preinstalled with Solaris 8, which includes an Apache webserver, an LDAP server, email server, FTP server, DNS server... Basically everything that would be considered "standard" stuff. They're more or less designed to be colocation boxes for smallish websites.

You also have basically the entire world of free Unix software available on it -- almost anything that runs on Linux can be compiled for Solaris.

Sun servers are very solid machines, if you decide to plunk something on it you'll be quite content with the results.

I thought of Ebay, but there are quite a few for sale already. Sun seems to be handing quite a few out.

Mind you, if Solaris contains all that stuff, I might well use it myself.

Thankyou very much for your reply.
