Hi, we've got an old box that's going to be moved to a LPAR in a p570, and we wonder if we can simply make an mksysb and then restore it to the LPAR. It's AIX 5.2, don't know now wich maintenance level (but I think greater than 4).

In case this is possible, after installing, can we migrate to AIX 5.3, in order to have all the partitions benefits like micro-partitioning?

Thanks

We do this all the time only requirements for a 570 must be met. We accomplish this by doing a NIM mksysb install with a LPPsour and SPOT of 5.2 ML4 or greater. This all the drives needed by the OS//for P5's are installed during the install

Thanks for such a quick reply. We're not planning to do this with NIM, but I suppose it will also work with a tape.

Now the thing is if we migrate from 5.2 to 5.3, if we can now use micro-partitioning.

To use micro partitionning you'll also need to have an APV Licence enven if you're in AIX 5.3

Yes, I think the new box is shipped with the license, but you're right, I'm going to check it.

To do this off of tape you will need to boot from a recent AIX 5.2 CD and install your mksysb from the CD menus so that the proper drivers will get loaded for your p570. Just booting and restoring the mksysb off of tape will not work.
