Ok, now first off I am a total database installation novice. I am required to install Oracle 9i onto an old NT configured thus: a small partition with NT loaded and a second large partition (E:\).

Downloaded all 3 Oracle.zip files and unzipped as directed to 3 folders on E drive. All is well with that. Now I run the setup.exe in Disk1 and it installs to my C:\ drives temp directory a time and date stamped OraInstall folder and ends. So I go to the OraInstall to the setup.exe there and run this. It cannot find the bin\javaw.exe. I copy this folder and file to under the directory and still nothing. I change the oraparam.var file to an ini and edit it pointing the SOURCE to E:\stage\products.jar and the JRE_Version to the E:\stage\components\...\win32 folder along with the OUI_Location. Run the setup again. Nothing. No error messages, no hour glass, no install screen, no Oracle Folder in Program Files not a brass razoo.

I am now stumped after searching endlessly for help on Oracle, NT sites, help groups, you name it. So any advice anyone can give me will be truly appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Barb

Hi,
This is due to Incorrect extraction of files using Winzip.
ImportSpecs, Stage , and Install directories were not created by Unzip.
This occurs when the 'Use Folder Names' option in Winzip is not checked when extracting the files to the local folder.

If this option is not checked, files extracted from the patch will be created under a single folder, causing environment paths defined in oraparam.ini file to be not found.

Check 'Use Folder Names' option in Winzip when extracting the patch files .
Then, run setup.exe file from the folder where the files were extracted to.

To correctly unzip and extract the patch, double click on the zip file, and on the Winzip screen select all the files and ensure that the 'Use Folder Names' option is checked before extracting them to a local folder.

After the extraction, the following folders and files should be created for the installer to work correctly:
Folders : ImportSpecs, Stage , and Install .
Files: Readme.txt and setup.exe.

Hey
Thanks for that although it has not helped. I was using another zip product so I downloaded winZip. I did as you suggested and checked the Use Folder Names option and extracted to each Disk(n). In Disk 1 there are, amongst other folders, a Stage and Install folder but not an ImportSpecs folder. In all the other disk folders there is a stage folder. I have checked to make sure I have the latest version of all these zip files (92010NT) and I do. So where then is this elusive ImportSpecs file? There is however, in Disk1 the Readme.txt and setup.exe.

Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks heaps.

Further to the above post, I downloaded the files onto my other computer that has XP on it. The 9i install files work on both NT and XP. I ran the install process on the XP box and it ran without error (well up to a point as I didn't want to actually install it on XP but I did get the Oracle Install window which I never got on NT).

So I assume it has something to do with the fact that it is NT or that it is a partitioned NT install.

I am now drivescrubbing the NT box and reloading NT without partitions to see if that will work. Will let oyu know.
