I am trying to install XP Pro into an already formated seperate partition in a dual boot NT4/sp6a environment. I booted from the XP CD and setup appeared to hang at "Setup Is Starting Windows" while in text mode. After waiting 5 minutes, I cycled the PC and eventually got back to NT. Now my CD-R drive (E:, drive XP installed booted from) is not seen by NT. My CD-RW (F:) is still seen and works fine. All else in NT so far appears to be fine.

My first priority to to get my E: drive back for NT. My CD-R drive still appears in BIOS setup and NT Disk Administrator. New BIOS loaded last week. CD's known good (i.e. read fine in F: drive). Does anyone have any idea what XP setup may have modified to stop this drive from being seen in NT ?

Copy the NT versions of NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM back to the root directory of your boot drive.

Then edit c:\boot.ini to remove the references to XP.

Just ran a full compare against my backup/mirror drive to check for changes (checks everything except system32\config i.e. NT registry files). No files differ (fyi I did a full backup just prior to XP install, including registry files). I don't think XP install even got far enough to copy files.

Does XP install change anything flashed on the motherboard ? Been reading in Q224826 about ACPI problems during Windows 2000 install. Might my problem be something XP did inconnection with ACPI ?

This is an XP link but it does contain some NT information which might be worth considering.

At least you have a full recent backup of NT you can restore from.
