I am having this error when i try to start Enterprise Manager for SQL 2000, " Error 65535: General Error".

We have a server with SQL 2005 installed and running properly but then our software vendor tried installing SQL 2000 and now we're getting errors trying to open 2000 and can't even uninstall it now because we're getting errors there also.

" The log file 'C:\program Files\Microsoft SQl server\MSSQL\Uninst.isu' is
not valid or the data has been corrupt. Uninstallation will not continue."

Does the sequence in which they are installed make a difference? My suspicion is that it does but I need confirmation on that.

We've looked at the method of trying to manually uninstall 2000 but it requires removing registry entries that 2005 uses so we can't do that. Is there a way around this?

My guess would be that the vendor tried to install SQL 2000 as a default instance when SQL 2005 was already setup as the default instance.

I'd call the vendor and force them to fix it. It's probably going to involve manually removing SQL 2000, then possibly reinstalling SQL 2005, then installing another SQL 2000 instance as a named instance.

mrdenny, thanks for your feedback. But if we go through the process of removing and reinstalling does the sequence of which one is installed first make a difference? In other words should 2000 be installed first and then 2005? Would that be the cause of our errors?

I usually recommend that you install SQL 2000 first, then SQL 2005, then SQL 2000 SP4 then SQL 2005 SP2. Don't forget that one of the instances will need to be a named instance.

I would still recommend calling the vendor and getting your pound of flesh as they hosed your system.

Oh trust me the vendor has already heard it from me.

Thank you for your feedback and the confirmation of what I was thinking the problem was.

No problem.
