After a few installs I have noticed the request to configure an email address and SMTP server after the reboot towards the end of the installation. What is this all about? Why does IP Office install require this when I have not installed IMS or any other type of messaging product? This is requested from a standard install. If this works in a limited capacity then what is the difference between IMS and thi?

I'm assuming you're installing VM Pro when you're referring to the SMTP information. If this is so, then the following is true.

With Voicemail Pro, the system can send via SMTP one of two options. It can send a notification of new voicemail (You would get an email just indicating a new voicemail) or you can have it forward/copy your voicemail in a .wav file to your email address. This is a basic function of Voicemail Pro. The IMS integration would allow you to integrate into your Exchange server for messages, either for Text to Speech, or other various options.

This is different to IMS.

SMTP of MAPI voicemail email sending (the request you are receiving) is used in conjunction with the Manager settings for copy, forward and alert for voicemail to emails. This is used for one way only, sending.

IMS allows syncronization of voicemails and voicemail emails with the use of your exchange server. For example:

A voicemail is left, which gets put into your exchange client email box, a custom form is used with outlook which allows you to play the message through your phone or on your computers speakers.
If you delete the voicemail from your email, it deletes it from your voicemail box aswell and vise versa if you delete it from your voicemail box, it deletes it from your email.

IMS can attach the wav file to the email or leave it on the voicemail server. The SMTP and MAPI can only attach it the wav file which will put more load on email servers.

You do not have to use it, its quite a good feature though.
