I have SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition on my server at work. I would like to be able to use SQL Server and its tools for development at home - so I can work from home more regularly.

My problem is that I cant seem to do an instal from the CDs that I have from work on my home PC.

I have two CDs one called Personal Edition and one called Standard Edition.

My home Pc runs windows xp professional.

Any help much appreciated.

You can only install the client tools if you install from standard disk. If you want to setup a db, then install from the personal edition, this should be able to work with XP workstation.

Standard Edition must be installed on a server.

Personal CAN be installed on XP Pro. But Microsoft's website has this caveat:
SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition is offered for desktop and mobile use. Personal Edition does not contain the full functionality of Standard Edition. For more information on the capabilities of Personal Edition, read the Choosing an Edition of SQL Server white paper. Analysis Services—including online analytical processing (OLAP), data mining, and other data warehousing features—are included in Personal Edition but cannot be installed on Windows 98 or Windows Me.

Now about the issue of not being able to install Personal:
do you have a license for it? Is the install disk for Windows XP Pro or is it for a different OS? (I don't know if that makes a difference). Does your home computer meet the minimum system requirements?

For system requirements see:

You can install standard on 2k prof as I do the same thing at home to help learn.

Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?

Thanks both - I try to instal Personal Edition but get a message saying that a previous instal of SQL Server is stopping the new instal - I have never installed it before on this machine - any clues ?

biglebowski,

That's interesting that you could install the Standard Edition on Win2k Pro....here's what Microsoft says is the only Win2K OS's that it will work on (bolding is mine for emphasis):

• SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition can run on the following operating systems:
Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition1
Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition1
Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition1
Windows® 2000 Server
Windows 2000 Advanced Server
Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

Windows NT® Server version 4.0 with Service Pack 5 (SP5) or later
Windows NT Server 4.0, Enterprise Edition, with SP5 or later

Evaluation, Developer, Personal, and MSDE Editions WILL work on Win2K Pro according to Microsoft.
