I have run into a (small) problem when installing qmail. I am in the process of migrating to Linux (from Win2k) and beeing fairly new to Linux I might well be doing something daft.

I have installed qmail to /var/qmail and it seems that my insatllation is basically OK, as I can start and stop qmail. Also, qmailctl stat reports:

/service/qmail-send: up (pid 20750) 6739 seconds
/service/qmail-send/log: up (pid 20937) 0 seconds
/service/qmail-smtpd: up (pid 20938) 0 seconds
/service/qmail-smtpd/log: up (pid 746) 10791 seconds
messages in queue: 0
messages in queue but not yet preprocessed: 0

Similarly ps -ef grep | 20750 reports:

qmails 20750 743 0 15:15 ? 00:00:00 qmail-send
root 20761 20750 0 15:15 ? 00:00:00 qmail-lspawn ./Maildir
qmailr 20762 20750 0 15:15 ? 00:00:00 qmail-rspawn
qmailq 20763 20750 0 15:15 ? 00:00:00 qmail-clean
root 21373 861 0 17:08 tty1 00:00:00 grep 20750

However, when running inst_check I get the following response:

My guess would be that I have messed up the symbolic links, but I cannot seem to find the error. My Linus distribution is Suse 8.0, so the rc-directories are:

/etc/init.d/rc0.d
/etc/init.d/rc1.d
etc.

Where should the sym. links be? An example would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You're probably right about the symbolic links not being set up quite right. The results of qmailctl stat show that the installation isn't correct. All of the services should be up for more than one second. I'd suggest reading David Sill's "Life with Qmail" and follow it EXACTLY in a clean install - it'll work!
