Inserting today's date to a mysql table 1

I am very new to php and mysql and I know this is simple but I've searched the

http://www.php.net

site as well as the

http://www.mysql.com

site and can't locate the answer.

I have one of my fields in my table set to a date field. I cannot determine how to write today's date to it.

cheat and make mysql write if for you
UPDATE sometable set somefield = curdate();
