How can I convert a date into a format that Oracle8i will recognize?

We always use the format DD-MON-YYYY in our oracle databases.

theDate = '12-APR-2001'

sqlstring = "update table set DBDate = to_date('" & theDate & "','DD-MON-YYYY')
